The book industry is a $27 billion business, most of that money coming from nonfiction books intended for adults. (Association of American Publishers, March 31, 2008). Even during a recession, with bookstores howling about diminished sales and ebook revolution pacing like a hungry wolf at the edge of the meadow, book sales are down by less than a cumulative 10% in 2009. That's STILL a lot of money - how much of it are you getting?
The two most profitable secondary revenue centers for authors are doing speeches, seminars and consulting. Speaking generates a whopping 48.9% of non-book profits, with consulting close behind at 47.6%.
The National Speakers Association, the largest and most prestigious organization of professional speakers in the world and of which Wendy Keller has been a member since 1995, reports that the majority of speakers speak 20-30 times a year at an average income of $1,000-$3,000 for 45 - 90 minutes of talking.
